Rauscher Family : Generation 2 : Frank Joseph Rauscher and Rosine Kaiser

(8) Frank Joseph Rauscher (my 3rd Great-Grandfather) was born on 13 Aug 1839 in Alsace, France and died 13 May 1916 in Vernon, Oneida County, New York. He was the first son of (16) Anton and (17) Catherine Rauscher. He immigrated to the US with his family 1851 when he was 12 years old. He appears to have gone by his middle name, Joseph. He was a farmer and a Catholic.

(9) Rosine “Rose” Kaiser (my 3rd Great-Grandmother) was born about 1850 in Baden, Germany and died about 1875 in Vernon, Oneida County, New York. She was only 25 years old when she passed. She was the first child of (18) Michael Kaiser, Sr. (1827-1912) and (19) Johanna Christina Weiss Kaiser (1825-1905). Around 1855, her family immigrated from Baden, Germany to Rome, Oneida County, New York. She was a Catholic. I do not believe she was any relation to her mother-in-law Catherine, as Kaiser was a very common surname in Germany.

Joseph and Rose were likely married around 1868 when she as just 18 and he was 29. They are listed in the 1870 census as living in Vernon, Oneida County, New York. They had a 6 month old son, (4) George Andrew Rauscher. Rose’s sister Catherine, 11, was also living with them.

They had two more children, before Rose’s death around 1875. Ida Caroline was born in 1871 and Rose Helena in 1872. After Rose’s death, their son, George, would remain with Joseph and his new family, Ida would be raised by Joseph’s sister, Abolonia, and Rose Helena would be raised by her maternal grandparents, Michael and Johanna Kaiser.

Jospeh would go on to marry Veronica Massert and have 6 more children with his new family.

The 1880 census, shows that Joseph was a farmer like his father. After his father's death, Frank J Rauscher was granted a portion of Anton's land on 7 Mar 1898. On 7 Apr 1899, Frank J Rauscher purchased land from Anna (Rauscher) Ott in Oneida County (New York Land Records, 1630-1975). Anna Ott was the daughter of Joseph Rauscher, whom I believe was most probably Anton's brother and Frank Joseph's uncle. Anna's father, Joseph, died on 22 Jan 1899 and she was left a portion of his property.

On 13 May 1916, at the age of 76, Joseph died of stomach cancer in Vernon, New York. He was buried at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Rome, Oneida County, New York. He had 10 children and 22 grandchildren.

His son, George Andrew, my 2nd great grandfather would marry Flora Hilbert and have 5 children. They will be covered fully in the next post.

His daughter, Ida Carolina, married John J. Craig and had 3 children.

His daughter, Rose Helena, married Frederick John Happle and had 5 children.

His son, John Joseph, married Anne L. Russell and had 5 children.

Frank Joseph and Veronica had two sons, Vincent and Phillip, who died young and a daughter, Catherine, who would die at age 12.

His son, Edward, would marry Mary Agnes White and have 4 children.

His daughter, Anna Marie, never married. She lived in New York City and was a High School Mathematics teacher. It is suggested that she either attended or taught at Columbia University. I do have records of her teaching at the Society for Ethical Culture School at 33 Central Park West and the Evander Childs High School for Boys and Girls, both in New York City. Below, is a picture of her from the 1921 Cliffside Park High School Yearbook of New Jersey.
